I can’t begin to tell you how wrong it is to release results of early voting. The Constitution specifies the date for Election day, and assuming you approve of the concept of early voting at all (which is debatable but, I feel, a good thing in terms of getting more people to be able to vote), you should CRINGE at the concept of releasing results…or even exit poll data…before the polls are CLOSED. People should not have the benefit of knowing what everyone else is voting before casting their ballots. It makes it way too easy to corrupt the election results with the “I wanna be on the winning side” vote. The secret ballot is as much to protect the integrity of the elections as it is to protect people from being shit on because they voted AGAINST the majority. If you release the results in advance, the pressure to vote with the majority so as to avoid ridicule and threats of your peers increases….especially for some people. It’s wrong and it should stop.
In the UK, the law FORBIDS exit polling and the release of results until the polls are ALL closed. Here in America, we let CNN ‘call’ the race sometimes before any votes have been counted. #WTF America?
If you are in CA and you already know the results of the East Coast and Midwest, do you think that might influence some people’s vote? You KNOW it does. I know it does. CNN and Fox know it does. Nuff Said.
