Renewable energy is fast becoming cost competitive with fossil fuels. Solar projects have produced energy at costs per megawatt below that of coal. This is a turning point because, all things being equal, economic motivation is the fastest way to create change.
Make solar cheaper than oil and coal, and how long do you think it will be before big energy corporations see the profit motive and switch? Penalizing fossil fuel use with carbon taxes might help to curb use slowly, but nothing will spur the winds of change to renewables faster than pure greed. Make solar and wind power cheaper to build and run than fossil fuels and it’s game over. Bye bye coal. Love you, oil, but there’s a new game in town.
