ROBERT WEINER, BEN LASKY: The predictable effects of marijuana legalization

Ugg. People, the “gateway effect” of marijuana, is an unproven suggestion that anti-pot protagonists use to defend the war on drugs. There is no causal relationship ever shown, just a proclivity to try other drugs if you tried Marijuana. The fact that you tried weed implies that you have this characteristic. You’ve probably tried booze. Maybe tobacco. Any way you spin it, you are more likely to experiment, evidenced by the fact that you already have experimented. It doesn’t prove that the ‘drug’ you experimented with (in this case, weed) CAUSED you to try others. It simply proves you are more likely to try different types of drugs if you’ve already tried one. It applies to alcohol, cigarettes….anything that alters ones reality even slightly…especially if there are taboos against it.

Don’t buy into this failed argument. Alcohol is the biggest “gateway drug” there is, and we all know that there are millions of alcoholics who will never try heroine…and some that will. More alcoholics will try heroine than non-drinkers…simply because they are more likely to experiment. Drinking alcohol…or using any other mind altering substance, legal or not, to make you feel better… is evidence that you already are more open to trying drugs.

Please stop with this bullshit argument that does nothing to show cause and proof, but simply highlights an obvious element of human nature…some people are more likely to experiment with substances to make them feel better. That’s all it shows. Pills. Booze. Weed. Coke. Sex. Danger.
